Faculty Council Summary – 11/24/08

November 25, 2008

Professional Growth reported they had received 26 applications for Adjunct Grants. They will commence a review of applicants following the Thanksgiving Break.

Extensive discussion was held regarding a faculty-initiated Administrative Procedure covering Course Syllabi. Presently there is no uniform college policy regarding syllabi. What has been developed was amended and forwarded to Cabinet for consideration. Cabinet has three options: approve as submitted; approve with revisions; reject. If approved, a number will be assigned and this procedure will be formally considered by our college shared governance system.

The ongoing college reorganization effort was briefly discussed. Council President related that faculty input has been extensive and seriously considered by the administration throughout this process. At our next Council meeting (December 8), we will consider faculty recommendations regarding the role and responsibility of Deans under reorganization. Particular focus will be on the separate and shared roles for Campus and Academic Deans in the evaluation of faculty.

Faculty Council – 11/10/08

November 11, 2008

Council considered proposed course and program approvals. There was a great deal of discussion regarding course content for those courses submitted as diversity courses. Two of three courses submitted were approved (AOS 225, Office Procedures, and ANTH 101, Introduction to Anthropology). AH 140, Introduction to Allied Health, was not approved and the discussion resulted in a recommendation that there be a moratorium on new diversity course approvals until CI&L could review and clarify the diversity criteria.

APs 652, Transfer of Credit into HACC Credit Programs, and 815, Reclassification of Professional, Administrative, and Classified Staff, were approved and forwarded for action.

The transition to Office 2007 continues. In addition to scheduled HACC training, you can find online tutorials at Microsoft Office Online. It has been indicated that Front Page 2003 may remain available on your office computer if you specifically request it. There is an Open Source web editor (NVU) available for download from the Virtual Campus or from the internet. This is also available as a portable application for use on a Flash Drive. There are many other freeware and shareware applications available.

There was much discussion regarding proposed criteria and methodology for evaluating full-time faculty on their advising responsibility. A recommendation was made that lead be passed to FPPC in evaluating and, if deemed necessary, developing a more useful process.

Ron Young provided an updated schedule for reorganization decisions: Nov 12 for Department structure; Dec 10 for Division structure; Dec 17 for assignment of Deans to Divisions and Campuses. He thanked those who had provided input regarding Department structure and indicated he would be looking for comments and recommendation for Division structure following the Department decisions.

Happy 233d Marine Corps Birthday and Veterans Day to all!
